Day 7 - Luke 7

More signs and wonders and a confirmation of Jesus as ‘The One’

Gives us further insight into what it means to be Jesus -

be compassionate
be 'cued in' to what is going on around you - have eyes and ears open to recognise someone elses need
be encouraging - acknowledge what is good in others
be straightforward

Good morning all,

Honestly? Always! Struggled a bit with writing today's post - why? 'Coz, to me, it is more of the same and I did not gain any 'new' or 'different' insights to what we have all been writing over the past week. This IS about sharing our journey as we read Luke - so that is where I am am (today at least!)

Have an awesome day everyone - reflecting Jesus's nature ;)

Thanks for your honest post Gemma.

I'm interested in anyone's thoughts about the prostitute who was kissing Jesus' feet and the interaction between Jesus, the prositute and the religious leader.

I also think this was the first time Jesus raised someone from the dead. Why did he do this? Because "his heart went out to the mother"...compassion. Then what? People were filled with awe and news about Jesus spread far and wide.

Great picture Gemma :)

So much for not looking Andrew!!
What struck me today was (30 - 35) that no matter what God does, those who do not want to know him will find some reason to criticise him. the sort of thing: "If God is so loving, how come..." "If God is so just, how come....". We can waste time trying to 'explain' God to those who are really not interested, no matter he does or we say. We just have to Live like Jesus!
re the prostitute, Simon & Jesus. It was interesting that Simon had NOT offered Jesus the customary niceties for a guest. What was his motivation for the invite? It seems so that he might have an opportunity to have the better of Jesus - which the incident with the woman provides. I found it ironic that there Simon is thinking "If he was a prophet...blah blah" and Jesus immediately demonstrates his ability with thought reading and a very quick comeback to what had not been spoken out.
He knows our innermost thoughts. No matter what we look like on the outside... that should keep us on our knees looking for the alabaster jar...

What struck me today was the contrast between true faith in Jesus Christ as opposed to having a 'religious spirit'.

That may not make any sense to anyone but it's what came into my mind as I was reading.

Short and sweet today.

Rosaleen, that is so true what you said about wasting time with those who aren't interested. I have been thinking more about this lately and there are a few more excellent examples of this coming up in Luke.

I'm with you Gabi on the "true faith" v "religious spirit" thing. May God continue to transform our lives as we surrender to him more and more.

re reading the book - online through the Iris blog. The two students. A Couple of things that struck me as they describe how they struggle with the disparity between our lives - and the poverty they find there:
"They have a desperation for this righteousness with a yearning that they have for food.
These men and women view the whole gospel in a different light than we do in the West…the words of Jesus take on a different meaning and depth in the eyes of the poor."

It is hard for us to put ourselves in the shoes of people who have nothing - we cannot get into that 'frame' but we can trust God - his words bring life and hope even when we who are so priviledged have ceased to marvel at them.
It is not guilt that we are carrying, but a question of how God desires for us to live in the world of have and have-nots.
This is a big issue for me.

Me too Rosaleen. I found this section of the book got my mind racing...

What a busy day Jesus had! First he does a remote control healing of the servant, then he wears his 'Life, Be In It' T-shirt to a funeral, then he has a bit of time for a chat about his mate John the B, and wraps up the day with a pedicure at dinner. What a legend! He seems to take it all in his stride. First he softens and opens the hearts of the people by demonstrations of God's power, then he cuts into the religious hearts of stone with words like arrows to their pride and arrogance. What a legend! May he ever soften my stoney heart...

Great 'summary' Chris! Your way with words always makes me smile .... you'd be a 'natural' with young people I'd imagine ;)

Here! Here! - on wasting time with those who are not interested. (Rosaleen's comment)

I have 'discovered' this on several occassions this past 12 months.

I will minister to people who do not know GOD, happily and passionately.

However, time is precious and when it comes to people who DO know GOD, who HAVE known GOD but are actively choosing NOT to live in HIS Spirit because by doing so would interfere with their pursuit of 'thorns' .... not interested!

I'm with you on this one Gemma! I will look forward to hearing your comments on verse 5 tomorrow - sorry, I'm jumping ahead a bit here :)
