Yes, amidst a world where people think they (and not God) control the earth, we worry about global warming and not child prostitutes, neglected babies, children and adults - which we DO control!
Imagine an election where the main topic was not Climate Change - but alleviating the poverty of living experience of thousands of Australians and millions of people outside of Australia!
The world is pre-occupied with Global Warming and what we as humans can and should do... so in researching v25 - 28 I came across a site that states that according to NASA, Mars has increased approx 1 degree in temperature since the Viking mission in the 1970s. This appears to be a true report - just google: Nasa MARS warming Anyhow - I just put this all in because it is so easy for us (given our human nature that longs for personal safety) to go withthe flow around us and become distracted from the only central fact of our lives - God reigns - over everything.
We should be v34 'on guard' in His Kingdom when Jesus comes again.
I'm with you Rosaleen. I care about the environment and greenhouse etc but I'm still a bit of a global warming skeptic - but like the spin off in changed behaviours. I too would like the same passionate bandwagon to focus on world poverty - still if the global warmists are right then there will be huge devastation on the coastal populations of poorer nations.
I wish the election would pass by so we can stop hearing about the poor Aussie battler struggling in first world luxury.
I loved your comment from last night Garry: "If we really, really, really, really, really believed this stuff we would be living very different lives wouldn't we..." or something like this.
'We' would be living different lives? Was that the comment?
I don't agree - Not for me anyway.
We can only pass comment on ourselves and not others.
I am living life to the best of my ability making JESUS's message the central part of it. At this point of time I have no plans to change anything other than to continue to grow in the direction I am now heading.
I am not the judge of anyone's life and nor should anyone else be. Only GOD knows what is in our hearts and what we do with our giftings.
Many people would be held back from living their life 'differently' by partners with different values and faiths.
So to say if WE 'really' beleived is a judgement and personally, I think inappropriate.
I have this internal conflict about poverty. We as christians seek to reach all the corners of the earth with His message yet in the most remote areas, most poorest nations they recieve him with such an open heart. Are these people really the poorest? By our worldly standards of human comforts absolutely, even measureable abandonment of human rights - again by our educated standards.
In the midst of these poorest nations its people are living REAL lives that are not cloaked in the falseness of material endeavour and masked first appearances. They have a richness of spirit and steadfast faith.
I suggest to you that the true POOR are living in their comfortable homes, cars, lives - educated to a level of professionallism that deems them so far from living an authentic life the meer concept of richness of spirit and faith is alien.
Who sends a mission to save these POOR? indeed we even dismiss ourselves to evangelise to these desolate poor of spirit, especially if we are educated ourselves. Oh no that would be too uncomfortable as we would not only have to use our gifts, advance them and take our eyes off the obvious needy. Don't you realise it is us whose "hearts will be weighed down..."v34 because our intellect gives the enemy more options.. to be of two minds.
God is in control of my life. In being single minded and I am lead by his direction and the blessing of using my own gifts including that of intellect and professional acumen. He will uses you in all your strength and weakness to His Glory if you let him. "Be always on the watch and pray..."v36
Hi Karen! Welcome to this blog. Thankyou for your wise and insightful comments.
Gemma: maybe my post wasn't helpful on this blog which engages a variety of people wider than those who met on Tuesday night. Garry's comment was in the context of our conversation on materialism and it was my understanding he was referring to those in the room, or maybe even just himself and Sherrie. I didn't see it as judgemental in any way and actually thought it made a really good point - how much do we (I)truly believe the stuff we read about in the bible applies to us today.
Anyway, probably enough said from me, I will leave Garry to comment further if wishes to clarify anything.
Just a note on Karen's comment re: poorest nations. Perhaps it would be interesting to see the rate of Christian conversions within third world countries as opposed to Australia. I think your point is valid Karen, that although the status of these 'poor countries' is measured by the individual's material wealth or economic status, their spiritual growth and richness is not lacking. How does God describe his nations? I wonder if we're one of the poorest? (spiritually speaking)

I thought this was a great comment on skepticism and unbelief. Check it out by just clicking on the link and it should go there directly.
